Billy Mabrey

“So far in this life I have been only a child, occasional long-term boyfriend, student, graduate, and a part time pizza guy when the bills had to be paid. Currently I am an art instructor for “Monart School of Art” in Keller. It’s a wonderful rewarding job, helping kids and adults find their artistic voices!”

Billy Mabrey is a 2005 graduate of Southern Methodist University with a B.F.A. in Studio art, with concentrations in Photography and Printmaking. He lives just outside of Dallas in Grapevine, Texas. He has a wide range of random interests including music performance and recording, cosmology and astrophysics, mathematics, aquariums, the mind and perception, and of course photography and art.

He started printing gum bichromate prints during college after learning the process and found a knack and love for it almost immediately. His abilities come from an insatiable curiosity about the way things work. He is always one to take the world apart, one piece at a time, to reassemble it with a new understanding. With gum bichromate printing he can dissect our world with photographic images and technique together.

Billy Mabrey often explores the world behind what people normally choose to perceive. Be it the physical clockwork behind places and things, or an emotional or thoughtful state brought on by the subject of an image. This has always been the goal of the physical sciences and the arts, to reveal the world beneath what is. Photography allows him to do this by objectively retaining most of the visual information in the world at a location of space and time of his choosing. Using the photograph as a template, and through the selective and additive editing processes of printing, he brings his own vision and experience into existence.
